8-Day Uganda Gorillas & Wildlife family tour
Our 8 day Uganda family safari packs the very best of the Pearl of Africa into one easy, well-paced trip.
Our 3 day Kibale chimpanzee safari takes you into one of the best primate forests in Africa. The famous chimpanzees of Kibale Forest National Park are wild. However, they have been habituated, so they are not afraid of people, and you can get close to them. In addition, you walk through Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a paradise for birds and small mammals.
There are plenty of other primates to see once you are done with the chimps. For example, look for the grey-cheeked mangabey, an old-world monkey that could pass for a small, hairy baboon. You can also spot red and black-and-white colobus monkeys. Then there is the rare L’Hoest’s monkey, with its distinctive white beard. These monkeys live in female-led groups. In total, Kibale is home to 13 primate species.
Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is home to many mammals, too. For instance, it shelters the rare and shy sitatunga, a semi-aquatic antelope with long, splayed hooves. There are also bush pigs, bushbucks, otters and mongooses. If you are a birder, you are in luck, because more than 138 bird species have been recorded in the swamp. Look out for the great blue turaco, papyrus gonolek, hornbills, waxbills, weavers, cuckoos and kingfishers.
We pick you up from your hotel in the morning and start the journey to Kibale at a relaxed pace. There is no hurry and no strict plan. Instead, you enjoy a leisurely drive west as the scenery changes from busy city streets to rolling farmland and, finally, lush green forest. By late afternoon, you settle into your lodge while the rainforest sings its evening chorus. Take time to unwind and recharge, because tomorrow promises an unforgettable adventure.
Driving time: ± 6.5 hours
Accommodation: Kibale Forest Camp
After an early breakfast, we head to the park headquarters to meet the ranger guides. They brief you on the dos and don’ts, and also tell you where the chimp families were last seen.
The walk follows real forest trails. They are shaded and full of roots, and sometimes muddy depending on the season. So, good closed shoes matter more than fashion here. Trekking can take up to 4 hours. Once you find the chimps, you get a full hour at close range. You may watch them groom each other, squabble, nap in the fork of a tree or crash down to the forest floor a few metres from you. On the way in and out, you will almost certainly see grey-cheeked mangabeys and colobus troops in the canopy, while birdsong fills the air.
After lunch back at the lodge, the pace changes. Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is a community-run reserve. Here, the walk follows a raised boardwalk and forest path through papyrus swamp and dense thicket for about three hours.
Accommodation: Kibale Forest Camp
After breakfast, you start the road home. We take it easy, with plenty of stops to stretch your legs, take a few more photos and pick up a souvenir or two. Finally, we drop you back in Kampala or Entebbe.

This trip is ideal if you love primates and have only a few days in Uganda. For example, it fits nicely before or after a work trip. The chimp trek is usually easier than a gorilla trek. Even so, you may walk for a few hours on uneven, sometimes muddy trails, so a basic level of fitness helps.
Bird lovers will also enjoy the Bigodi swamp walk. Meanwhile, families with older children often find the trip a great first taste of the forest. If you are travelling with kids, ask us about the current age limit for chimp trekking.
You can track chimpanzees in Kibale all year round. That said, the drier months usually make forest trails easier to walk. In contrast, the wetter months bring muddy paths but also lush scenery and plenty of fruit in the trees. Because chimps follow the fruit, sightings remain good in every season. Either way, pack a light rain jacket, since forest showers can come at any time.
Your chimp tracking permit is included in this tour. Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and their rates can change from time to time. Therefore, we will confirm the current tour price when you enquire. To learn more, see our primate tours in Uganda.
Kibale is a great base for exploring western Uganda. For instance, you can continue south for boat trips and big game on our 3 day Queen Elizabeth wildlife tour. Alternatively, you can add mountain gorillas in Bwindi on the 3 day Bwindi gorilla trek. You can also combine both apes on our gorillas and chimps combo safaris.
Every trip with Roots Tours & Travel is tailor-made. So, just tell us your dates and group size. Then, we will plan your 3 day Kibale chimpanzee safari and send you a free itinerary.
