2 Days Lake Mburo Safari

Giraffes in the savannah on a 2 day Lake Mburo safari

Our 2 day Lake Mburo safari is a short, easy wildlife break from Kampala or Entebbe. In just one night away, you can enjoy two game drives, a nature walk and the open, rolling scenery of Lake Mburo National Park. As a result, it is ideal if you have a free weekend, a short layover or only a few days in Uganda.

What you can see on this short safari

There is so much to see in this compact park. For example, you will find plenty of bushbuck and impalas. In fact, Lake Mburo is the only park in Uganda where impalas live. You can also look for defassa waterbuck, topi, plains zebra, warthogs and common duiker. In addition, keep an eye out for dwarf and marsh mongoose in the grass.

The park is also home to eland, one of the largest antelopes in Africa. Leopards and hyenas live here too, although sightings depend on luck. Lions are rare visitors. Still, if one appears, it is a real highlight.

A rewarding trip for birders

If you love birds, you are in luck. You will spot plenty of species on the drives and walks. Moreover, a boat ride on the lake can reveal birds of the papyrus swamps, such as the shy African finfoot. With some luck, you may even see the rare shoebill. For more ideas, see our bird watching tours in Uganda.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park

First, we pick you up from your hotel or any place in Kampala or Entebbe. Then, we set off on the scenic road to the park. On the way, you will pass through green countryside, farms and small trading towns.

Once you arrive, you check in and relax for a short while. Later, we head out for a late afternoon game drive. This is a great time to look for zebras, impalas, topi and waterbuck as they graze in the soft evening light. Afterwards, you return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Game Drive and Transfer to Kampala

At dawn, we leave the lodge and enter the park for another game drive. Early mornings are often the best time for wildlife, because many animals are active before the heat of the day. After the drive, you also enjoy a guided walk in the park.

Finally, we begin the journey back to Kampala. You arrive in the city later in the day with fresh memories and plenty of photos.

Why choose a 2 day Lake Mburo safari

Lake Mburo is the closest savannah park to Kampala and Entebbe. Therefore, you spend less time on the road and more time with the animals. It is also the smallest savannah park in Uganda, so game drives feel intimate and easy to enjoy.

In addition, the park has a special mix of habitats. You will see open grassland, acacia woodland, rocky ridges, swamps and a chain of lakes. Because of this variety, every drive can bring something new. The park is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which sets the entry fees. We will confirm the current rates when you enquire.

Tips for your Lake Mburo trip

A little planning helps you get the most out of a short safari. Here are a few simple tips from our guides:

  • Start early. Morning drives are cooler, and many animals are more active.
  • Bring binoculars. They help you enjoy distant antelopes and small birds.
  • Pack light layers. Mornings can feel cool, while afternoons are often warm and sunny.
  • Wear neutral colours. Khaki, green and brown work well on drives and walks.
  • Carry sun protection. A hat, sunscreen and insect repellent will keep you comfortable.
  • Charge your camera. Also, bring a spare battery and memory card.

Lake Mburo is open all year. However, the drier months are usually best for game viewing, because the grass is shorter and roads are easier. On the other hand, the wet months bring green scenery and fewer visitors.

Extend your 2 day Lake Mburo safari

Lake Mburo lies on the road to western Uganda. As a result, it is easy to combine with other parks. For instance, you can continue to tree-climbing lions and boat trips on the 3 day Queen Elizabeth wildlife tour. Alternatively, you can head south to see mountain gorillas on our 4 day Bwindi gorillas and Lake Bunyonyi safari. You can also browse more wildlife safaris and game drives across Uganda.
