6 Days Mount Elgon & Sipi Falls Safari

Sipi Falls dropping into a green valley on the Mount Elgon and Sipi Falls tour

Our 6 day Mount Elgon and Sipi Falls tour combines a real mountain climb with the beautiful waterfalls of eastern Uganda. First, you relax and hike around Sipi. Then, you trek up to Wagagai, the highest peak of Mount Elgon at 4,321 m. Finally, you return to a hot shower and a well-earned drink at Sipi.

Trip overview

Mount Elgon is the eighth highest mountain in Africa and the fourth highest in East Africa. In addition, it has the second largest free-standing volcanic base in the world. The mountain rises more than 3,000 m above the surrounding plains, so it dominates the local landscape.

Climbing Mount Elgon is an exciting alternative to the bigger climbs in Uganda and East Africa. For one thing, it is easier to reach all year round. It is also less crowded, with a milder climate and a lower altitude. Many hikers start from Budadiri, the most popular starting point, and follow the Sasa trail towards the peak. Meanwhile, Sipi Falls makes a perfect base before and after the climb. From the falls, you can enjoy wide views over the slopes of Mount Elgon, Lake Kyoga and the plains of Karamoja.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Kapchorwa District

In the morning, we pick you up and set off for Kapchorwa District. Our base is Sipi River Lodge, close to the falls. The falls sit right on the edge of Mount Elgon National Park, so you wake up with the mountain on your doorstep.

Day 2: Explore Sipi Falls

After breakfast, we drive to Sipi village. Once there, you can choose how to spend the day. For example, you can hike to the Sipi waterfalls. Alternatively, you can take a guided walk around the village to learn about the history and culture of the local people.

Day 3: Travel to Budadiri/Bumasola

In the morning, we head to Budadiri/Bumasola to start the climb. The first stretch climbs through the hillside communities above Budadiri. Further up, the trail enters the national park and climbs the steep “Wall of Death”. At the end of the day, we make camp at Mude Caves camp.

Day 4: Summit Wagagai

Early in the morning, we leave camp and head straight for the summit at Wagagai. Afterwards, we walk back down to camp (3,500 m – 4,321 m – 3,500 m). Luckily, the walk downhill to Mude Caves camp is fairly short and relaxing.

Day 5: Back to Budadiri

On this day, we hike back down to Bumasola. Then, we drive back to Sipi River Lodge for a hot shower, a good meal and a well-deserved drink!

Day 6: Back to Kampala

Early in the morning, we start the drive back to Kampala via Jinja. On the way, we stop at Sezibwa Falls for lunch. We then arrive in Kampala in the late afternoon.

Who this trip suits

This trip is ideal if you love hiking and want something different from a classic game drive safari. You do not need technical climbing skills. However, you should be fit and comfortable walking for several hours a day on steep, uneven paths. Summit day is long, so some hiking experience will help you enjoy it.

On the other hand, the Sipi days are gentle. As a result, the trip also works well for friends or couples who want a mix of adventure and rest. If you prefer a slower pace, we can shorten the climb or simply plan more time around the falls.

Best time to climb Mount Elgon

You can climb Mount Elgon all year round. Still, the drier months are usually the most comfortable. During this time, the trails are firmer and the views tend to be clearer. In contrast, the rainy months make paths muddy and slippery, although the forest looks lush and the waterfalls are at their fullest. Either way, mountain weather can change quickly, so always come prepared for rain and cold at camp.

Tips for your Mount Elgon climb

  • Train before you go. Regular hill walks will make the climb far more enjoyable.
  • Break in your boots. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are a must, because the trails can be wet.
  • Pack warm layers. Even after a warm day, nights at Mude Caves camp can be very cold.
  • Bring rain gear. A light rain jacket and a dry bag protect you and your kit.
  • Go slowly. A steady pace helps your body adjust to the altitude.
  • Drink plenty of water. Also, carry snacks for energy on summit day.

Mount Elgon National Park is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Park and hiking fees are set by the authority and change from time to time. Therefore, we will confirm the current rates when you enquire.

Extend or combine your trip

Eastern Uganda is a great start or finish to a longer holiday. For instance, you can head west for big game on our 3 day Murchison Falls safari. Alternatively, you can add mountain gorillas with the 3 day Bwindi gorilla trekking safari. You can also explore more Uganda national parks and destinations or meet local families on our community and cultural tours.
