6 Days Magical Kenya Safari

Cheetah watching the plains on a 6 day Kenya safari

Our 6 day Kenya safari links three of the country’s best-loved parks in under a week. You start with the elephant herds of Amboseli National Park. Next, you visit the flamingo-fringed shores of Lake Nakuru National Park. Finally, you spend two full days in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya’s most famous wildlife area.

The Maasai Mara lies in south-western Kenya, on the border with Tanzania’s Serengeti. It is known for the annual wildebeest migration and for the Big Five: elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes and rhinos. In addition, giraffes, hippos, zebras, hyenas, warthogs, jackals and many antelopes roam its plains. Lake Nakuru, meanwhile, is famous for its pink flamingos and its rhinos. Lions, leopards, buffaloes, monkeys and gazelles live there too.

6 day Kenya safari highlights

  • Amboseli, with big herds of elephants and buffaloes.
  • Lake Nakuru, where thousands of flamingos can turn the water pink.
  • Game drives in the Maasai Mara, including a pre-breakfast drive to catch the predators.
  • An optional hot-air balloon flight over the Mara.
  • A visit to a Maasai village, with traditional dances and local food.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Amboseli National Park

Early in the morning, your driver-guide picks you up from your hotel. First, he briefs you on the trip. Then you set off on the scenic drive to Amboseli National Park.

You arrive in the afternoon for lunch and check-in. Afterwards, you head out on an evening game drive. Look out for elephants, buffaloes, wildebeest, warthogs and many other animals. Later in the evening, you return to the lodge for dinner and the night.

Day 2: Morning game drive and travel to Lake Nakuru

After an early breakfast, you go on a game drive across the park. At this hour, early risers leave their shelters to hunt, while night animals hurry back to rest. You can spot huge herds of elephants and buffaloes, as well as zebras, warthogs, wildebeest, gazelles and bushbucks.

After lunch, you travel to Lake Nakuru National Park through the Rift Valley. You arrive in the evening to relax, have dinner and stay the night.

Day 3: Game drive and transfer to the Maasai Mara

After a good breakfast, you set off on a morning game drive. The park has wooded and bushy grasslands, so it supports a wide range of wildlife. In addition, you will see the lake itself, where thousands of flamingos can sometimes paint the water pink.

After lunch, you drive to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It is renowned for its wide savannah and big game.

Day 4: Game drive in the Maasai Mara

You head out on a game drive before breakfast. This is the best time to find night hunters and early risers, such as lions, leopards, hyenas, vultures and owls. Take your time to watch and photograph them. Then you return to camp for breakfast.

The afternoon is free to relax. Alternatively, you can take an optional hot-air balloon flight for a 360-degree view of the Maasai Mara.

Day 5: Full-day game drive and Maasai village visit

After a tasty breakfast, you set out on a full day of game drives in the Maasai Mara. Sightings here can come quickly. You may meet lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes and rhinos, along with warthogs, zebras and many others.

After lunch, you visit a Maasai cultural village to meet some of the world’s most welcoming people. You can enjoy traditional dances, taste local food and chat with your hosts.

Day 6: Return to Nairobi and departure

In the morning, you have breakfast. Then you drive back to Nairobi for your departure flight.

Who this Kenya safari suits

This trip is a great fit for first-time visitors to Kenya who want variety in a short time. It also suits couples, families and photographers. Because you watch wildlife from a safari vehicle, you do not need any special fitness. However, the parks are spread out, so expect a few long drives between them.

Best time to go

You can take this safari all year. The dry months, roughly late June to October and January to February, are usually best for game viewing. In particular, the wildebeest migration is often in the Maasai Mara between about July and October, although exact timing depends on the rains. On the other hand, the wetter months bring green landscapes, fewer vehicles and lots of baby animals.

Tips for your safari

A few simple tips will help you enjoy every game drive:

  • Pack light layers. Early mornings can be chilly, while middays are warm.
  • Bring binoculars. They help you spot distant cats and birds.
  • Wear neutral colours. Khaki, green and brown work best on drives.
  • Carry sun protection. A hat, sunscreen and sunglasses are essential.
  • Bring small notes. They are handy for crafts at the Maasai village.

Amboseli and Lake Nakuru are run by the Kenya Wildlife Service, while the Maasai Mara is a national reserve managed by local county authorities. Since park fees change from time to time, we will confirm the current rates when you enquire.

Extend your Kenya safari

If you have more time, our 9 day Explore Kenya safari adds more parks to the journey. On the other hand, if you only have a weekend, the 3 day Maasai Mara wildlife safari is a great short option. You can also combine Kenya with gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda, since flights link Nairobi with Entebbe and Kigali.
