3 Days Serengeti & Ngorongoro Wildlife Safari

Giraffe at sunset on a 3 day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari

Our 3 day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari is a short but rewarding trip into true wilderness. In just three days, you visit two of Africa’s greatest wonders: Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. Along the way, you have a good chance of seeing the Big Five: lions, elephants, buffaloes, rhinos and leopards.

Birders will love this trip too. Between them, these two areas host more than 500 bird species, so you may well spot a favourite. As a result, this 3 day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari leaves you with lasting memories of wildlife, birds and huge landscapes.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Pick-up and transfer to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you set off through the green highland farms of Karatu and across the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Then you descend onto the endless plains of the Serengeti, at the heart of Africa’s wildlife. Along the way, keep watch for the Big Five: lions, buffaloes, elephants, rhinos and leopards.

Day 2: Game drive and transfer to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Serengeti is a true African wonder. It is home to millions of large mammals, including the Big Five, and more than 500 recorded bird species, such as the rare northern white-crowned shrike. After breakfast, you head out on a game drive to enjoy these sights. In addition, you may spot predators such as hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and leopards.

After a picnic lunch, your guide leads you to the Ngorongoro Crater, which lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The conservation area covers more than 8,000 km². The crater itself is the world’s largest unbroken caldera, and it is often called one of the wonders of the natural world. Here you can look for around 100 bird species not found in the Serengeti. On top of that, the crater holds some 30,000 large mammals.

After the day’s activities, you return to your lodge for dinner and the night.

Day 3: Return to Arusha and departure

After a hearty breakfast, you pack your bags and begin the journey back to Arusha. First, you pass through the green forests of the Ngorongoro highlands to the exit gate. Then you descend the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Finally, you continue to Arusha to catch your flight home.

Who this short safari suits

This trip is ideal if you are short on time, or if you want to add a safari to a beach holiday or business trip. It also suits couples, families and photographers. Because you watch wildlife from a vehicle, you do not need special fitness. However, the drives are long, so be ready for full days on the road.

Best time to go

You can take this safari all year round. The long dry season, from about June to October, usually brings the easiest game viewing. On the other hand, the green season brings fresh grass, newborn animals and fewer vehicles. The Ngorongoro Crater has water and grazing all year, so its wildlife is rewarding in every season. The Serengeti herds move with the rains, so we can advise you on where they are likely to be.

Tips for your trip

A few simple tips will help you enjoy your short safari:

  • Pack warm layers. The crater rim can be cold in the early morning.
  • Bring binoculars. They help you enjoy distant cats and birds.
  • Wear neutral colours such as khaki, green and brown.
  • Carry sun protection, including a hat and sunscreen.
  • Keep your camera ready. Sightings can happen at any moment.

The Serengeti is run by Tanzania National Parks, while the crater is managed by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority. Since entry fees change from time to time, we will confirm the current rates when you enquire.

Extend your safari

If you can stay longer, our 6 day Northern Circuit wildlife safari adds Tarangire and Lake Manyara. Alternatively, you can unwind on the beach afterwards with a holiday in Zanzibar. You can also discover more parks across Tanzania.
