Day 2: Gorilla trekking and the twin lakes

Gorilla trekking is one of the most fascinating experiences on earth. After an early breakfast, your driver guide takes you to the park headquarters for a briefing at about 7:00am. Then, you set off into the forest.

The trek requires some fitness. However, good hiking boots, a walking stick and a bottle of water make it much easier. In most cases, it lasts between two and six hours, depending on how far the gorillas have moved.

Once you find them, you watch the gorillas play, feed and protect each other. Meanwhile, the silverback keeps an eye on his family. In addition, the forest is home to golden monkeys, elephants, buffaloes and many birds.

Afterwards, you return to the lodge for lunch. Later, you visit the twin lakes, Burera and Ruhondo. You also take a walk in the local community and watch traditional dances. Finally, you return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Accommodation options:

Muhabura Hotel – Budget
Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge – Moderate
Five Volcanoes Lodge – Luxury

Day 3: Kigali and departure

After an early breakfast, you check out of the lodge. Then, you drive back towards Kigali International Airport. On the way, your guide takes you through Kigali city, where you can shop for souvenirs at local craft markets. Finally, you have lunch and continue to the airport for your flight.

Who this safari suits

This safari suits travellers with limited time, because the park is close to Kigali. It also suits couples, solo travellers and anyone combining gorillas with a business trip or a longer holiday. However, the trek can be steep and muddy. So, you should be reasonably fit. If you have any concerns, tell us and we will help.

Best time to go

You can trek gorillas in Rwanda all year. Even so, the drier months from June to September and December to February are the most popular. During these months, the trails are usually firmer. On the other hand, the wetter months bring lush green scenery and fewer visitors. Whenever you go, pack a rain jacket, because showers are common in the mountains.

Tips for your trip

A little planning makes your trek more enjoyable. Here are some tips from our guides:

  • Book your permit early. Permits are limited and sell out in busy months.
  • Wear sturdy boots. Trails on the volcano slopes are steep.
  • Bring gloves and long sleeves. They protect you from nettles.
  • Hire a porter. Porters carry your bag and support local families.
  • Turn off your flash. Flash photography is not allowed near the gorillas.

Permit prices are set by the Rwanda Development Board and change from time to time. Therefore, we will confirm the current rate when you enquire. For more about the country, visit Visit Rwanda or read our guide to gorilla trekking in Rwanda.
