After your breakfast, at 6:30 am, your driver and guide will be on hand to help you pack all of your luggage in the safari vehicle and then commence your drive to Murchison Falls National Park. You will make a bathroom break-in Migyera along the Kampala- Gulu highway to also stretch your legs. After the break, you continue to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Rhino trekking takes about 2 hours in the company of well-trained and knowledgeable local guides. After this great experience, you will head to the restaurant for your lunch. After lunch, embark on the journey to Murchison Falls National Park.

Comfortable accommodation: – Heritage Safari Lodges.

Day 2: Game Drive and Boat Ride.

In the morning, Today, you are up at 6.00 am, have breakfast and head out for a game drive for a chance to view the glorious day-break from across the open savannah, birds and dotted woodland as well as riverine vegetation along the Nile. Game drive in Murchison Falls National Park is among the best in Uganda, garnished with wonderful birdlife that makes the park a wildlife and birders’ paradise. The park is home to 76 mammal species including herds of buffalo, and elephants that are scattered in the savannah woodland areas. The park is also home to a good number of camouflage leopards as well as a good number of lion prides.

The park is also known for the endangered Rothschild’s Giraffe. On the Nile’s banks and in the pools, you find hippos and crocodiles. You explore the area and are in search of lions, buffalos, elephants, giraffes, antelope and a lot more. At between 10-11 am, you will return to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. After lunch, at 2.00 pm, you will head out for the boat launch to the bottom of the powerful Murchison Falls. This three-hour boat cruise climaxes at the edge of the Rift Valley escarpment at which point you will get off the boat and trek to the top of the falls (wear sports shoes while on the boat for ease of trekking to the top). Having worked up a sweat, once at the top, get bathed in the misty spray that the Nile creates as it forces itself into the 7-metre cleft to create the famous Murchison Falls.

Gorillas give the most breath-taking and unforgettable experience for trekkers. It is important for trekkers to know where and how to go for Gorilla trekking and the requirements before you head for your trekking destination.

Mountain Gorillas are in Uganda, DR Congo and Rwanda. In Uganda the national parks are; Bwindi Impenetrable National park and Mgahinga Gorilla National park. DR Congo has Virunga National park whereas Rwanda has Volcanoes National park. The Gorilla trekking differs from country to country and it is important that you get this information on Rwanda, Uganda and Congo.

The question asked frequently is which place is best to do Gorilla trekking and you will find your answer from this article;

Gorilla trekking in Uganda.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda happens in Bwindi impenetrable National park and to a small extent in the Mountains of Mgahinga Gorilla national park. Mgahinga is part of Virunga and Volcanoes national parks. Uganda has 2 sections with a total of 18 gorilla families, of which Bwindi national park has 17 groups.

The Bwindi gorilla groups namely; Ruhija, Buhoma, Nkuringo and Rushaga. Mgahinga national park gorilla family has the Nyakagezi group surrounded by the Virunga volcanoes, Mt Gahinga, Mt Muhavura and Mt Sabinyo.

Bwindi national park is located quite a long distance from Entebbe/Kampala. It takes approximately 10 hours’ drive from Entebbe/Kampala to Bwindi national park. One can also schedule a flight to the park which takes approximately 40 minutes or flying into Kigali and drive 4 hours to the park.

Uganda has approximately 400 or more gorillas half of the world’s gorilla population.

Uganda has 17 gorilla groups 15 in Bwindi and 2 in Mgahinga National park. A Gorilla permit costs $700 per day making it more affordable than Rwanda. Cost of the permit is a determinant in decision making for Gorilla trekkers.

Apart from enjoying trekking the gorillas, one can also enjoy Gorilla habituation. This usually takes 4 hours unlike the hours spent while trekking. This experience costs $1500 per person.

Apart from visiting the Gorillas, Uganda has other national parks you can combine with gorilla trekking; these include chimpanzees, mountain hiking and other wildlife animals.

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

In Rwanda, mountain gorillas in Volcanoes national park situated 113 kilometers from Kigali International airport (approximately 2-3 hours). It is located north-western of the country at the Uganda and DR Congo boarder.

One advantage with this national park is that it’s near the city compared to Bwindi national park of Uganda. Rwanda makes it the easiest gorilla trekking option for travelers.

The park has approximately 150 gorillas divided into about 10 groups and other wildlife animals.

Dian Fossey founded the gorilla conservation in Rwanda. Before she was killed, she was forced to cross by the civil war to Congo and hence the reason why the oldest gorilla groups are found in DRC.

Rwanda increased the gorilla permit to $1500 which is twice the Ugandan fee and thrice DRC cost. Despite it being the most expensive, Rwanda still remains the best option for travellers who have little travel time.

Rwanda’s high tourism strategy has a promising increasing income for the local man who lives around Volcanoes national park. The volcano safari experience is one of the most expensive in Rwanda. Besides the gorilla permit, the lodges are costly with lesser lodge options. Spending two nights in one of the lodges near Volcanoes national park can cost one about $10,000 in that short period of time. These lodges come with a high end standard experiences despite the

Gorilla trekking in D.R. Congo.

Gorilla trekking in Congo happens in Virunga national park known for being the oldest park in Africa. Congo has raised the number of mountain gorillas from 75 to 300 individuals or more. Gorilla trekking in Congo is cheaper than Uganda and Rwanda. A gorilla trekking permit in DR Congo costs only $400 for foreigners and $150 for the local man.

Congo unlike Rwanda and Uganda is known for conserving lowland gorillas. These gorillas are smaller in size compared to the mountain gorillas, their faces are narrow and have a softer fur.

The Virunga Park has outstanding features such as active volcanoes Nyiragongo which recently erupted in 2021 and Nyamuragira. These can be hiked in one day and it’s a great experience for tourist.

The park was closed before but by 2014 the number of tourists has increased. Apart from trekking gorillas in Virunga national park one cam also experience chimpanzee trekking.

When one is deciding on the best destination for gorilla trekking they should look at different factors such as permits, driving time, airports, accommodation options, safety and other activities to do and many others.

Comparing between these 3 gorilla trekking options, the cheapest gorilla safari is;

When one is determining to go with a cost saving option, DR Congo is your destination. This is because it is easy to access Virunga national park from Kigali. It is a 3 hours’ drive across to Goma Congo.

From this safari one can watch habituated chimpanzees, climb mountain Nyiragongo among others after the gorilla experience.

Another affordable option is trekking in Uganda.

A permit costs $700 per person and accommodation ranges from budget, mid-range and luxurious. The challenge comes in where one has to drive for almost 9 hours from the airport to the park. Here one can opt to use air flight from Kampala to Bwindi to reduce on the driving hours. To avoid inconveniences one should book earlier for gorilla permits.

The beauty of trekking In Uganda is that there are other activities to be enjoyed. Uganda has 10 national parks compared to Rwanda that has 4, meaning there is much to do in Uganda. These include pygmy cultural visits, game drives in one of the most visited park Queen Elizabeth which is known for its amazing wildlife and climbing lions, Lake Bunyonyi among other destinations while going or coming back from either Bwindi national park or Mgahinga national park.

A luxury traveler has Rwanda as the best gorilla destination. As mentioned above, Rwanda has the most luxurious lodges around Volcano national park. It is characterized by high end experiences. Leave alone the fact that it has the most expensive permits, Rwanda has the most organized and safe place to do mountain gorilla trekking.

Apart from gorilla trekking one can also visit Dian Fossey’s place of rest, volcano climbing, visit twin lakes, city tours, local communities, the amazing art galleries, golden monkeys and the genocide sights.

Alternatively, as an additional experience after the gorilla trek, you can either visit the Dian Fossey’s grave and museum, the local communities, climb volcanoes in that region, visit Lake Kivu, or also watch golden monkeys.

You will trek both the gorillas and golden monkeys as well as sighting Africa’s big 5 mammals in their natural habitats and the great wildebeest migration. The trip also gives you cultural retreats with some of the most popular ethnic groups in East Africa.

Day 1: Arrival in Uganda

At the airport, you will be received by our driver guide who
will transfer you immediately to your pre-booked hotel for relaxation ahead of
next day’s journey.

district. This is the only home of Rhinos in Uganda. Tracking these huge land
mammals exposes you to the first set of the big five family before you finally

The 7 days Tanzania Wildlife safari specifically takes you to some of the world’s greatest wonders in Tanzania’s Northern Circuit; including Ngorongoro Conservation Area comprising one of Tanzania’s highest concentration mammals and notable population of carnivores and predators. A visit to Tarangire National Park exposes one to biggest herds of elephants in Africa and Lake Manyara National park is hub to the only group of tree climbing lions in Tanzania, dramatic wildlife as well as a shallow soda lake situated on the edge of East African rift valley.

Day 1: Arusha – Lake Manyara

Pick up from airport or hotel in Arusha and depart for Lake
Manyara National park. This specific national Park is popular for its beautiful
pink flamingos, climbing lions plus dramatic population of wildlife. Arrive,
check in and immediately take a short game drive or just relax at the lodge,
have lunch and once again head out into the park to admire Manyara’s landscape,
nature and spend valuable time with lions, antelopes, hippos, zebras etc.

During a flamingo season, Lake Manyara is the best place to
view pink flamingos as they feed on algae along the lake shores. Retire for dinner and overnight stay at a pre-booked lodge.

Day 2: Lake Manyara to Serengeti National Park

Have breakfast, and head to Tanzania’s and Africa’s most
popular park, the Serengeti National Park. This is a journey of 205km,
traversing the adorable Serengeti plains, pleasant high lying farmlands of
Karatu as well as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Descend into the heart of Serengeti national park, with its
rolling savannah plains, stretching to as far as the eyes can see, and straight
into the central area of the park – Seronera area which is one of the premier
wildlife hubs of the park, featuring River Seronera a water source for many
animals in the area.

Check in at the lodge in time for lunch, relax and in the
afternoon, head out for a game drive to explore some of the park’s residents
before sunset.

Day 3: Explore the Serengeti Plains

A morning / sunrise hot air balloon is the best way to ride
over the scenic Serengeti landscape, while spotting rich game, meandering
rivers and the numerous pockets of villages.

Return for breakfast, and after go for yet another game drive
along River Sogore circuit. This river meanders through the plains south of the
Seronera river, making it a perfect habitat for lions, Thomson Gazelles,
Ostriches, Topis, and cheetahs.

Have lunch at the lodge, and later follow the Kopjes’ circuit
which runs anti-clockwise around the Maasai Kopjes, an excellent shelter for
huge prides of lions and formidable colonies of cobras. These Kopjes are well
scattered around the Serengeti Plains, characterized by water pools which
attract numerous animals particular in dry season to quench their thirst. Hence
this is a spot for exclusive wild game watching.

Day 4: Serengeti National park – Ngorongoro Crater

Early breakfast and drive out of Serengeti, heading to
Ngorongoro conservation area on a journey that takes approximately 4-5 hours.

this beautiful scenery.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Exploration

A warm breakfast and later descend into a 600m scenic crater
for an experiential day of full game drive. The Ngorongoro is particularly home
to over 30,000 animals making it one of the most wildlife – filled places in
the world and a shelter to some of East Africa’s remaining black rhinos.

Due to its year round supply of water and pasture, the
Ngorongoro conservation area is without doubt filled with variety of wildlife
for a good reason. Permanent residents here include Zebras, warthogs, elands,
hippos, giant African elephants, buffaloes, etc. Predators include cheetahs,
lions, leopards, jackals and hyenas. During a favorite season of the great
migration, which happens between June-September, visitors can sight the
magnificent wildebeest migration crossing from the Serengeti to Maasai Mara
National park.

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, undertake a 3.5 hours’ drive to Tarangire
national park, traversing along the Tarangire river. This area is mainly
comprised of low lying hills scattered on the floor of the East African Rift
Valley.

The acacia woodland vegetation, huge swamps, giant African
Baobab trees all characterize this region and are magnets to millions of
wildlife species especially during the dry season.

Take a picnic lunch, and immediately go on a game drive. Among other common sightings, Tarangire specifically is home to three rare species of animals, including the greater Kudu, fringed – eared Oryx, and the shy starling.
